Restaurant meals are increasing among the average American household. Almost half of the average household’s food budget is spent on food consumed outside the home. For the average adult this equates to a caloric increase of 130 calories over meals that could have been prepared at home. To assist consumers in reducing these calories the NYC Health department just launched MenuStat, a public database of 35,000 restaurant foods and beverages from 66 of the top U.S. restaurant chains.
The best option for eating healthy is a home prepared meal. However, since we all are busy and like to eat out occasionally, why not plan ahead? Take a few minutes and visit www.menustat.org and review your favorite fast food or chain restaurants and make a list of the best low fat low calorie options available on the menu.
